When viewed at optical wavelengths, the Whirlpool GalaxyΓÇÖs companion NGC 5195 is a rather shapeless mass, most of its features blurred by light passing through dust. This infrared image gives a much better view of the galaxyΓÇÖs stellar bar, running just above and below the nucleus.
